Whether your service needs to view structured patient records, send consultation summaries back to the GP, or manage appointment slots, 6B will help you navigate the technical, governance and assurance processes involved. Our team ensures your GP Connect integration is robust, compliant, and ready to deliver real-world impact from day one.

What is GP Connect?

GP Connect is a national NHS England interoperability service that allows authorised clinical staff to securely access and update patient records across care settings. It enables healthcare professionals to view, share and manage clinical information from GP systems in real time, regardless of organisational boundaries.

GP Connect supports care delivery by allowing integrated systems to:

  • View structured or HTML versions of the patient record
  • Send consultation summaries back to a patient’s GP
  • Manage appointments on behalf of GP practices (unavailable from June 2025 onwards)

GP Connect uses HL7 FHIR APIs and messaging protocols like ITK3 and MESH to support its functionality. It does not store data but facilitates secure real-time data exchange between authorised systems and GP software providers, currently EMIS and SystmOne.

Our GP Connect Integration Process

At 6B, we manage your end-to-end GP Connect integration journey – from technical scoping and NHS assurance to live deployment and support. We start by understanding your integration goals and aligning your product with relevant GP Connect API endpoints.

Our developers build against the NHS GP Connect FHIR specifications and messaging standards, supporting all core services:

  • Access Record HTML and Structured – View read-only versions of a patient’s record
  • Send Document – Send structured updates from external consultations
  • Manage Appointment – Book, amend or cancel appointments in registered GP systems (unavailable from June 2025 onwards)
  • Foundations API – Retrieve practice details and patient demographics

Throughout the process, we work with your team to complete Supplier Conformance Assessment List (SCAL) documentation, meet DCB0160 clinical safety standards, and achieve the necessary Technical Conformance Certificate. We also provide testing support in NHS England’s Integration Environment and help prepare for witness testing and go-live.

Real-World Use Cases

GP Connect is already improving care across a wide range of NHS and social care services. In emergency care, ambulance crews can access a patient’s GP record in real time. In mental health, shared access to clinical records helps inform treatment decisions. And in social care and community settings, up-to-date patient histories improve continuity of care across multidisciplinary teams.

Benefits of GP Connect Integration

Integrating with GP Connect reduces care delays, improves patient safety, and streamlines communication between services. Clinicians no longer need to request patient details by phone or fax, and up-to-date information is available instantly across systems. This improves care coordination and allows more time to focus on patients.

Appointments can also be booked into GP systems from external services – ideal for vaccination programmes, urgent care, or digital front door solutions. Sending structured consultation updates directly into a patient’s GP record further reduces administrative burden and ensures continuity of care.

GP Connect Integration FAQs

To integrate GP Connect, your organisation must comply with the NHS Digital Connection Agreement and/or End User Acceptable Use Policy. Additionally, you need to agree to the terms of the National Data Sharing Arrangement (NDSA) for GP Connect and use an IT system that has been assured by NHS England for GP Connect usage. Ensuring these prerequisites are met is essential for access to GP patient records for direct patient care.

6B provides comprehensive support throughout the GP Connect assurance process. This includes guiding you through the development against GP Connect specifications, assisting with the Supplier Conformance Assessment List (SCAL) submissions, and supporting the testing phase in the NHS England integration environment. We ensure that your consumer system meets all technical and clinical safety requirements for successful integration.

During the development phase, 6B offers technical support by providing access to specifications and supporting materials necessary for developing GP Connect capabilities. We help you interact with the NHS England system demonstrator for initial testing and verify that your system’s interactions are compliant with the required standards. Our team is also available to address any technical challenges you may encounter.

To obtain technical conformance, the steps include:

  • Submitting a use case and receiving approval from the GP Connect team.Developing your system against the relevant GP Connect
  • specifications.
  • Testing the system in the NHS England integration environment.
  • Completing the Supplier Conformance Assessment List (SCAL) and submitting it along with test evidence.

Once approved, NHS England’s Solutions Assurance Team will issue a Technical Conformance Certificate, allowing you to deploy your product in conjunction with an NHS Commissioner.

6B ensures clinical safety by guiding you through compliance with the Clinical risk management standard DCB0160. This includes assisting in the appointment of a Clinical Safety Officer, reviewing the clinical safety case report and hazard log, and ensuring all clinical risks are mitigated. We support the creation of your own clinical safety case report and hazard log to ensure all relevant clinical risks are addressed before implementing GP Connect.
